Non-Recognition of Somali Nationals: Causes, Impacts, and Solutions | Immigration Conference
Midaynta Community Services will be hosting an official conference titled “Non-Recognition of Somali Nationals: Causes, Impacts, and Solutions” on June 23, 2026.
This important forum will bring together community leaders, legal experts, policymakers, academics, and frontline service providers to examine the systemic challenges faced by Somali nationals navigating identity verification and immigration systems. Discussions will focus on the intersection of human rights, displacement, documentation barriers, and access to protection.
Conference Objectives:
- Address the gap between Canadian immigration and documentation requirements and the realities faced by individuals from conflict-affected contexts.
- Examine the humanitarian impacts of prolonged legal limbo, including family separation, barriers to services, and socio-economic exclusion.
- Explore practical and policy-oriented solutions, including the development of a Standardized Identity Toolkit to support more consistent and equitable identity verification frameworks.
We welcome community members, service providers, researchers, advocates, and policymakers to join this important conversation and contribute to identifying meaningful solutions.
