What Makes Mudug Peacebuilding Group Unique

The Mudug Peacebuilding Group stands out as a pioneering Somali-led initiative dedicated exclusively to advancing peace and social cohesion in the Mudug region. We are proud to be the only Somali community in the world consistently leading grassroots peacebuilding efforts through a structured, community-driven model.

Our most notable achievement is the establishment of weekly community meetings, where diverse voices from both the Mudug region and the Somali diaspora—especially from Canada, the U.S., and Europe—come together to discuss challenges, share solutions, and coordinate actions for peace. These regular forums have strengthened trust, accountability, and collaboration across generations and regions.

Our commitment is unwavering: we believe that lasting peace must be built from the ground up—by the people, for the people. Through sustained dialogue, inclusive engagement, and collective leadership, Mudug Peacebuilding Group has become a model for Somali-led peace efforts worldwide.

The Significance of December 17

Why is it important to hold a conference every year on December 17?

This date has become a symbol of remembrance and motivation for peace in the Mudug region. It marks the perseverance and tireless efforts of those who laid the foundations for peace. The aim is to raise public awareness and make December 17 a significant annual event—a day of unity and celebration, should both Galmudug and Puntland administrations agree.

The Role of the Somali Diaspora and Elders from the Mudug Region

The Engagement of the Somali Diaspora and Elders from the Mudug Region in the December 2022 Peace Conference

The elders, intellectuals, and members of the Somali community who participated in the welcoming event for General C/wali Jama Hussein (Gorod) held in Toronto expressed strong support for the peace initiative he was leading. They clearly affirmed their commitment to stand by the peace efforts in the Mudug region and declared their readiness to contribute in every way necessary.

On April 27, 2022, a major Iftar gathering was held in Toronto for all the clans residing in the Mudug region. This event significantly boosted preparations for the planned peace conference in Galkayo, scheduled for December 2022.

WhatsApp communication groups and Zoom meetings were established to bring together the different clans of Mudug and coordinate the peace conference planning. Regular Zoom meetings were initiated, held every Sunday, to ensure ongoing updates and coordination.
